| Foliage: | Densely tufted perennial herb spreading from short thick underground stems. Flowering stems rigid, triangular. 5-10 bracts at base of flowerhead, 5-15cm long. |
| Flowers: | Brown to coppery branched flowerheads with 6-10 primary branches to 20 cm long, divided into dense, oval to cylindric spikes 1-3 cm long. Many rounded or flattened 4-10-flowered spikelets; stem within spikelet broadly winged, October-February. |
